Heritage
The history of Polish settlers in New Zeland is tightly linked to the history of New Zealand itself. The first Poles to visit New Zeland arrived together with cpt. Cook at the end of the XVII century. The first polish familly that decided to settle in New Zealand was the Subritzky familly, they've came in 1843. The biggest group of Polish people so far that came to New Zeland in the XIX century, it was estimated to be between 500 and 1000 people. Back in XX century there were two major groups that arrived during, and right after the Second Wold War and after the Martial Law in Poland.
On 1 November 1944 to New Zealand arrived 733 polish children (many of them orphants) with 105 caregivers, after a very long and tragic way through Siberia. It was possible thanks to the efforts of Consul Wodzicki , his wife, Maria, and New Zealand Prime Minister Peter Fraser and his wife Janet.
15/08/1920 Bitwa pod Radzyminem The battle for Radzymin, which is close to Warsaw is also known as the "Miracle on the Vistula" in which the Polish army stopped the Bolshevik Red army entering the city and chased them deep into the newly created land of the Soviets. This way the Polish forces stopped the expansion of communism into Europe.
