Martial law in Poland 1981 – 1983, was introduce on the 13th of December 1981. Its introduction was against the law and against the Constitution. It was suspended on the 31st of December 1982 and lifted on 22nd of July 1987. During the martial law period the militia, SB (secret service) and the ZOMO (special forces) killed dozens of people and imprisoned thousands.
Like every year, there was the solemn ceremony in Dom Polski in Newtown on the occasion of Polish Independence Day. This year 11th of November fell on Wednesday, so the celebration took place on Sunday 15th November. It began by the Mass celebrated by the Polish parish priest, Father Tadeusz Świątkowki.
Christmas it is a special time, time of reflection and contemplation. There is a chance to slow down, meet with family at the Christmas Eve's table, share opłatek, and just be together. together listen to carols, or just sit with a cup of hot tea in the warm home and look at the Christmas tree with beautiful Christmas' decorations and lights.
By publishing this article (the first part was published in our previous issue) we would like to open a forum for all New Zealanders whose ancestors arrived in New Zealand from Poland. They came to Aotearoa with hope for a better future. Their children and grandchildren were born as New Zealanders. We invite you to write your family stories (and not only) to Gazeta Polonia.
Christmas is a special time for everyone irrespective where or in what climate we live. The unique atmosphere of Christmas makes people from every part of the world be charmed by the magic.

New Solidarity Grid Lamp as a reminder of Poland's Fight for Democracy. A Central Eurpoean street lamp from Sopot, will be unveiled on Park Terrace by Zbigniew Gniatkowski the Ambasador of the Republic of Poland and by Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel.
At the Wroclaw parish of Our Lady of Consolation of the Redemptorists, there is a Museum calle the Golgotha of the East. This institution is dedicated to the memory of the victims of the communist regime, mainly Poles deported to Siberia.
